What level of riding are you?

Understanding Our Riding Level System (Levels 1–4)

When booking in for programs, whether that’s private lessons or school holiday programs, we use a level system so you know exactly where you’d fit in and what sort of progression you can expect. This system runs from Level 1 through to Level 4.

Level 1 – Foundational Level

This is our foundational level. This is meant for people who haven’t been mountain biking before but are still strong bikers. What I mean by strong bikers is you should be able to ride with level feet and if you do come to a stop using both brakes, your feet shouldn’t wobble.

Ideally, you’re standing up and riding with level pedals, and if you come to a stop, your feet aren’t wobbling. This just shows that you’ve got the inherent stability to add more foundation mountain biking skills. If this isn’t the case, you may need to work on those foundation skills before you go mountain biking.

Level 2 – Early Trail Riding

Level 2 is where you started exploring some mountain bike trails on your own, and you can start to get down some great tree trails like Hammies, Hot Rod, or Morning Glory with relative ease.

The skills you’d learn in this level would be a foundational body positions to make your way around these descents more comfortably, along with some cornering skills to increase that traction.

Level 3 – Intermediate Riders

Level 3 is a bit of a broader concept. This is where most of intermediate riders, strong intermediate riders, come through. Ideally, you’d be comfortable on grade 3 and grade 4 trails and just venturing out towards black trails.

The progression you will learn in this level is a refinement in body movement, so essentially how you move on the bike while staying centered, how you create traction and pressure in the corners, and where the right amount of compression is on the jumps as well.

Level 4 – Advanced Riders

This is the most advanced level. Here you’ll be comfortable riding grade 5 trails and venturing out into grade 6s. Ideally, your riding would be fairly consistent when challenged and almost intuitive when you’re riding trails that are within your comfort zone.

Here, our instruction will add more refinement to your techniques so your skills show up in a more instinctive manner as you continue to challenge yourself.
